POKER DECK

For information on Loren Wiseman's current condition (King of Clubs/2010) click on this link.

(Go to the bottom of the page for info on the upcoming 2015 Poker Deck)
There was no 2012 or 2013 Origins Poker Deck.

Check this kickstarter link for how we financed the 2014 deck:

If you are a potential advertiser who came to this page from the kickstarter campaign, if you advertise you will get 100 decks. Kickstarter doesn't want to be a "store" so they limit kickstarter campaigns to offer ten items at most. But you will want extra decks to sell or give away.
There is a (possibly apocryphal) tradition that the four kings in a standard card deck actually stand for four real kings of history - Charlemagne, Julius Caesar, Alexander, and King David. With this in mind, we created an "Origins Poker Deck" that was sold at the Origins Game Convention in June of 2008. The four kings are four famous game designers (Gary Gygax, Dave Arneson, Jim Dunnigan, and Redmond Simonsen) and the rest of the cards are ads from various game companies, game conventions and game stores. There were only 6000 decks printed up, and when they are sold out, they will no longer be available. We will be selling these at all the conventions I attend until they are gone. If you would like to order one of the 2008 decks to be mailed to you, use this link. They are $5 each plus shipping.

If you want to buy the deck with a particular famous game designer in it, here are the names:
2008 Deck
Dave Arneson, Jim Dunnigan, E Gary Gygax, Redmond Simonsen.
2009 Deck
John Hill, Duke Seifried, Tom Shaw, Lou Zocchi
2010 Deck
Rich Banner, Frank Chadwick, Marc Miller, Loren Wiseman
2011 Deck
Don Greenwood, Steve Jackson, Sid Sackson, Greg Stafford
2014 Deck
Richard Berg, Tom Dalgliesh, Liz Danforth, Ken St Andre
I find a note to myself that for the first Origins "poker game" at Origins 2008, Austin Kochs of Dublin Ohio was the first person to collect a complete deck by going booth to booth and asking for card.
Sample cards from the 2008 deck:

We also created the 2009 version of our Origins Poker Deck. It has 4 new kings, and mostly new ads. If you'd like to purchase the 2009 poker deck, use this link. It is $5 plus postage. The four kings are Lou Zocchi, Tom Shaw, John Hill, and Duke Seifried. (If you don't know who these men are, and you are a gamer, you should buy this deck and find out.)

Sample cards from the 2009 deck:

Here is the 2010 version of our Origins Poker Deck. It has 4 new kings, and mostly new ads. If you'd like to purchase the 2010 poker deck, use this link. It is $5 plus postage. The four kings are Frank Chadwick, Marc Miller, Loren Wiseman and Rich Banner the four GDW guys. (If you don't know who these men are, and you are a gamer, you should buy this deck and find out.)

The 2011 version of our Origins Poker Deck has 4 new kings, and many new ads. If you'd like to purchase the 2011 poker deck, use this link. It is $5 plus postage. The four kings are Don Greenwood, Steve Jackson, Sid Sackson, and Greg Stafford. (If you don't know who these men are, and you are a gamer, you should buy this deck and find out.)

Sample cards from the 2011 deck:

Unfortunately there wasn't a 2012 or 2013 version of our Origins Poker Deck

Note that for each year, there are two different colors of decks. If you order TWO decks, we will send you one of each color. If you would like ALL TEN decks, for the special price of $30 (plus shipping) we will send you one of each color for each year. (It won't ship until after Origins in June 2014) Use this link

Note also that there are five kings in our deck. The King of Coins can be considered a third joker, or you can leave it as a fifth king, and say that the suit matches whatever suit you need to make a flush. Lester Smith has invented a couple of card games that use a poker deck with five kings, and he has posted the rules on his page at http://lestersmith.com/free-games/

Two Jokers: Flying Buffalo

Note that there are five kings in our deck. The King of Coins can be considered a third joker, or you can leave it as a fifth king, and say that the suit matches whatever suit you need to make a flush. Also please note that Lester Smith has invented a couple of card games that use a poker deck with five kings, and he has posted the rules on his page at http://lestersmith.com/free-games/

If you would like to participate in the 2015 edition, fill out the reservation form below and mail or email it to me. You don't need to get the art to me until April 1 of 2015, and I won't charge your credit card until April 30. You can send in the form early to make sure we save you a spot.

2015 Origins Poker Deck: I'm going to print up at least 6000 poker decks with the Origins logo on the backs, and 52 different advertisements on the fronts. I'll be selling these decks at all the conventions I go to, until they run out. Plus, we'll be playing a "Poker game" at Origins in June and Gencon in August.

How the game works: I'll put an ad in the Origins program book listing the booth numbers of all the card advertisers. I'll give each sponsor/advertiser a bunch of cards to give away. You can give one card to each customer who makes a purchase, or participates in a demo of your product, or whatever qualification you choose. The customer tries to get a "straight flush" (i.e. five cards in order, all the same suit). If he has a straight flush, he turns it in at the Flying Buffalo booth for an entry in the drawing.

For $299 you get your ad that you compose, in full color, on the front of one card (which can include your address, website, etc) which would appear on at least 6000 decks of cards; plus you would get 100 decks to sell or give away; plus you'd get a link to your website (if you have one) from the Flying Buffalo website (See above. This would be a permanent link to your website.)

Note that you might be able to sell your 100 decks for $3.00 each and recover your cost. I plan to sell extra decks for $5. PLUS if you are exhibiting at Origins, I'd include the Origins promotional game for no extra charge except you have to donate a prize. And if you have a booth at Gencon, I'll include you in the Gencon promotional game for $50 more (to help cover the cost of the ad in the program book) (again, you'd be expected to donate a prize) If you have a preference for which card you want your ad on, first come first choice.

If you wish to buy an ad on more than one card, they will be $260 each. And you may buy extra decks for $1 each if you are an advertiser. NOTE: I have not yet selected the "famous game designers" who will be the four kings. If you want one of your game designers to be a king, contact me ASAP. (I will expect you to buy an ad on at least 4 cards!)

I won't take any money until the cards are actually being printed -- I'll take a credit card number and charge you on April 30. Or you can pay me now, it's up to you.

Remember this will be a regular playing card deck. It will probably end up being a collectors item. Plus some people will play poker or whatever with these.

Rick Loomis

Technical details: give us a tif file if possible or a jpg or bmp if necessary. 300 dpi, make it 2 1/2" by 3" in size - we'll shrink it down a bit to fit on the card. We would prefer that you make the text part of the artwork, but if you can't do that, we will add the text, just tell us what you want to say. The art will be printed in full color. (no bleeds). We'll need your art by April 1, 2013. Note that WE will provide the outer part of the artwork - the standard card deck symbols. You just provide the art for your product or logo.

Questions, suggestions, or comments, email rick at flying buffalo dot com

Reservation form: I agree to purchase ____ cards in the "Origins Poker Deck" at $295 for one or $260 each for more than one. I agree to provide the artwork for my ad by March 31, 2015. If I have provided a credit card number, I understand that my card won't be charged until April 30. I also understand that if at least 30 ads aren't purchased, the project will be cancelled and all payments refunded. I also understand that at least 6000 decks will be printed, and decks will be given away or sold at Origins 2013, plus other conventions.
