If you ask for your Lizards! turn by email, you get a "postscript" file. Postscript is a text based language that instructs the printer how to construct the turnsheet data and graphics. This makes it ideal for transmission by email. Unfortunately the turnsheet arrives as 25 pages of data that is quite cumbersome. You can find the clan listings but the map is not there. So you need to do one of a few things to see your turn. If you have access to a postscript printer then its very easy. Take the file and copy it to the printer. You must bring up a command line. Under Windows 95 you just open up an MS Dos prompt under the start menu. The command looks something like this - copy path\lizturn.ext lpt1: where path is the location of the file, lizturn.ext is your turnsheet and lpt1: is your printer. If you make the mistake of opening the file by any text editor or word processor you can expect the print command to reproduce the 25 pages of text data which is not what you want.
I have also found that there are programs out there that will allow you to view your turnsheet as it is supposed to be seen and can forward the turnsheet to any printer that your computer is hooked up to. The first one is called RoPS (Roger's Postscript). It runs under Windows 3.1, 3.11, 95 or NT. It is shareware and will cost $30 U.S. It easily takes the turnsheet and displays and prints it. It takes up less than 500K or memory.
The other program is actually two programs called Ghostscript and Ghostview. These programs work together, are easy to use but are more useful to the professional because it can view Postscript and PDF files and runs under any platforms from Unix and Dos to all Windows and NT operating systems. It also can do some file format conversions. These programs are about 8 megabytes. Ghostscript is the engine that drives the process but Ghostview is the graphical interface program that makes it easy to use. Ghostview runs under OS/2, Windows 3.1, 95 and NT. These programs are distributed under 3 different versions. The version called Alladin's Ghostscript is the freeware version and will cost you nothing but then again neither will you get any software support. I've used all the above programs and found it easy to view my turns on the computer screen and to print to more than one printer type. I found the programs in a compuserve library but I'm sure they can be found on the internet also.
